As the end of 2022 nears, I hope this newsletter finds you all in good health. This year has proven to be an eventful one as travel and in-person meetings are once again possible. The Combustion Institute experienced several notable events. We gathered with friends and colleagues in Vancouver, elected six new members to the Board of Directors, and held a successful online meeting of The Combustion Institute's members. |

The CI's Saudi Arabian Section Collaborates on First of "Energy Debate" Series
KAUST was the host to the first energy debate organized by Saudi Youth for Sustainability. Organized in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Section of The Combustion Institute, this hybrid event aimed "to provoke Saudi Youth to rethink energy sustainability and its future." |

CI Members Meeting
The biennial CI Members Meeting was held on 13 September 2022. Among the topics discussed were The Combustion Institute's continued social media growth, the "future of combustion", and the 39th International Symposium on Combustion.

PROCI Volume 39 Updates
Final publication decisions are being made and accepted papers are now appearing online. If you have received notice that your paper has been accepted, you will hear from the production office prior to finalization. If you require color figures in the published version, please send a message to proci@elsevier.com and office@combustioninstitute.org and specify which figures will require color.
CI members interested in ordering Volume 39 of The Proceedings of The Combustion Institute can contact ussocieties@elsevier.com. Elsevier will be processing and handling all subscriptions. CoEC Combustion Autumn School 2022

PATC: Introduction To High-Fidelity Combustion Simulations Using HPC
This PATC, to be held over Zoom on 3 November 2022, will focus on presenting the role that high-fidelity simulations using HPC can make and provide an introduction to the state-of-the-art in numerical simulations of combustion systems. You can read more about the event here. |

Understanding and Predicting Hydrogen Combustion
In the Center of Excellence in Combustion (CoEC), new methodologies for the efficient simulation of hydrogen flames are being developed using High-Performance Computing (HPC). As part of this initiative, CoEC researchers will share new findings and methodologies for the understanding and prediction of hydrogen combustion. Within this frame, this training course is bringing together a number of experts to discuss the potential application of hydrogen across different sectors. It will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 30 November to 2 December 2022. More information can be found here. |

Call for Papers: 13th U.S. National Combustion Meeting
The Call for Papers for the 13th U.S. National Combustion Meeting, taking place 19 March to 22 March 2023, has been released. Paper abstracts must be submitted through the CI's Account Management System (AMS) portal by 1 December 2022, while WiPP abstracts must be submitted by 1 February 2023. |

2nd Asia Pacific Combustion Institute Summer School (APCISS-2)
The main goal of the APCISS-2 is to introduce the AP combustion and fire safety community to fundamental combustion problems, focusing particularly in the application of combustion and fire science to outdoor fires.
This event will take place 4-9 December 2022 in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Chile, with workshops to be held at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in Valparaíso. Applications should be submitted through the APCISS-2 website.

CoEC Combustion Autumn School 2022
The 12th Mediterranean Combustion Symposium will be held in Luxor, Egypt from 23-26 January 2023. The technical program will consist of invited lectures by eminent specialists from all over the world, oral presentation of the contributed papers and posters of the work-in-progress. 40th ISOC Technical Program Co-Chairs Appointed
The Combustion Institute is proud to announce the appointment of Bassam Dally of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia and José L. Torero of University College, London, United Kingdom as the Program Co-Chairs (PCCs) for the 40th Symposium. The PCCs set the tone for the technical program, including the selection of invited speakers and oversight of colloquia. The CI’s 40th International Symposium will take place 21-26 July 2024 in Milan, Italy.

Women in Combustion Luncheon & Post-Participation Survey
On Tuesday, 26 July 2022 the Women in Combustion Luncheon was held in Vancouver, Canada, adjacent to the CI’s 39th International Symposium on Combustion. Over 120 people attended, sharing diverse experiences over an informal meal. The CI is looking to build upon that momentum and potentially expand upon the "Women in Combustion" (WiC) initiative. To this end, we ask that all attendees complete a short survey by 31 October 2022. You can read more about the event here.

Dr. Frédérique Battin-Leclerc Wins 2022 Polanyi Medal
CI member Frédérique Battin-Leclerc was awarded the 2022 Polanyi Medal by the Gas Kinetics Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry at the GK2022 in Rennes. Congratulations Frédérique. |

Prof. Epaminondas Mastorakos Named a 2022 Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow
CI member Prof. Epaminondas Mastorakos, of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, was named one of 72 2022 Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows, an honor that recognizes "leading figures in the field of engineering and technology." The CI congratulates Prof. Mastorakos on this accomplishment. |

CI Members Awarded $514,981 by California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
CI members Albert Simeoni and James Urban will put these funds toward developing a model "to predict how fire spreads from burning wildlands to communities so that fire protection engineers can design homes and surrounding landscaping to better withstand destructive blazes." Congratulations Dr. Simeoni and Dr. Urban. |

CI Members Contribute to 100% Hydrogen Combustor for Aviation Project
CI Members Dr. Epaminondas Mastorakos and Dr. Pedro Magalhães de Oliveira are part of the team developing "a new 100% hydrogen combustor for aviation" called the LEAFINNOX. You can read more about the project here.
